... anthropy. The dictionary definition of philanthropy is "the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the donation of money to good causes.” and grass-roots charity and business club member the Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation aims to do just that.
Charity Chairman, Andy Preston, Trustee (and Centurion) Alastair Waite, and Paul Davison of Erimus Insurance Brokers, one of the charity’s Corporate Patrons, will join TVBC Chair Jane Reynolds ‘In Conversation’ to explain more. Highlighting the charity’s work, the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and the impact and benefit that charity has on businesses, and individuals, joining together to make the region a better place to live, work and do business.

Andy Preston, Chairman – Middlesbrough & Teesside Philanthropic Foundation
Andy is Chair of the Foundation Trustees. Having grown up in Middlesbrough, Andy gained an MA from the University of Edinburgh before working in London as financial markets trader.
He successfully built and ran a number of trading businesses for international financial organisations, later creating and managing a large hedge fund group for a European bank.
After moving back to the North East, Andy supported a number of local businesses, providing them with ideas and capital.
Andy’s extensive experience of charities includes being a patron of international children’s charity ARK (2003-08) and regional chair of Fairbridge Teesside (2006-10). With Tanya Garland, he founded the Philanthropic Foundation in 2011 and has been instrumental in bringing together around 40 local businesses and individuals as patrons and supporters, raising £1.7 million in the charity’s first four-and-a-half years.
In 2014 Andy launched the Foundation’s sister charity, CEO Sleepout, which has become a national phenomenon. He also chairs Tees Valley Education, a local multi academy trust.
Alastair Waite, CEO, Altec Engineering Ltd
A hugely successful North-East entrepreneur and major driver in the Teesside technology scene for many years, Alastair was a leading force in Onyx Group’s decision to become patrons of the Foundation and took part in the first ever CEO Sleepout at the Riverside Stadium in 2013.
Having worked on Teesside for the past 15 years, Alastair now runs his own consultancy business focused on helping businesses develop strategy, raise funding and deliver growth. He is also Group CEO of Durham-based Altec Engineering Ltd.
