2020 was an exceptional year for corporate finance, delivering well beyond expectations in terms of deals done and value delivered.
This is testament to the resilience, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit of businesses in the region. Given the scale of opportunity we now have across the Tess Valley, we are predicting the trading landscape for 2021 will be even better!
The presentation will cover the role of corporate finance in driving growth and will also touch on funding for growth, with a short review of the value of grant funding by Carl Wright.
During this presentation David will show how every project is unique, directed by the strategic goals of the business concerned. The real expertise is in adapting the process to meet the business’s needs, whilst maximising the prevailing external factors such as timing, funding routes and legislation changes.
David will present an interesting story of the disconnect often experienced between expectation and reality when a plan is executed. We have enlisted the help of a few of our clients to illustrate how deals can progress and the stories that accompany them.

David Wilson, Corporate Finance Director, Clive Owen LLP
David has over 20 years’ experience in accounting practice and has worked with a wide variety of businesses across many different sectors. He has successfully completed a significant number of transactions including corporate acquisitions, MBO’s, MBI’s, disposal mandates and growth/development capital investments.
During 2020 David was part of a team that successfully completed 30 North East transactions and a further seven across the UK, with a total aggregate deal value in excess of £120 million.
David was born in Middlesbrough and grew up in Redcar. He joined Clive Owen LLP in 2015 and became an Associate Director in 2017 and a Director in April 2020.
He enjoys spending time with his family, having two young children which keep him occupied. David’s Dad introduced him to Middlesbrough FC back in August 1985 and he has been attending matches ever since.
Carl Wright, Head of Grants Advisory Service, Clive Owen LLP
Carl was born in Stockton on Tees and after quickly realising he was not destined to become a professional footballer he went on to study accountancy at Durham University.
Carl joined Clive Owen in 2014 to specialise in grants advisory work and was promoted to Director in 2020, before becoming Head of Grants Advisory Services in 2021. Since joining Clive Owen, he has helped businesses to secure over £225m of grant funding, which has supported hundreds of projects and generated and safeguarded many thousands of jobs across the UK.
Carl’s work has encompassed grants ranging from £10k for local SMEs through to £20m plus grant offers for multi-national businesses. To Carl the amount of grant isn’t that important, a small grant can make a huge difference to a business and what is great to him is seeing how much clients value the support.
Carl now lives in Darlington and enjoys spending time with his family, and with two young daughters. He is a Middlesbrough fan but can occasionally be spotted watching Darlington too.
Phil Jackman, Director, Guerrilla Working
Phil has over 30 year’s in senior management in information technology, both in the private and public sectors, implementing systems across Europe and leading on the Digital Durham programme, which improved broadband access across ten local authority areas including Tees Valley.
Since 2017 he has run his own consultancy firm, Guerrilla Working, helping businesses to align their technology strategy with business needs. He is also a director of Dynamo North East, working to grow the tech economy of the region, the North East Initiative on Business Ethics and the UK Cyber Cluster Collaboration.
Phil was born in North Shields and has a long association with Teesside through the regional chair of the Society of ICT Managers and the North East ICT Managers. He is the author of two books.
