TVBC are delighted to welcome Peter Barron to our February event to help us understand the media and how we can use the media to promote business. Some strategies to be covered include:

Peter Barron Biog
Peter Barron is acknowledged as one of the most experienced and respected journalists in the regional press, with more than 30 years’ experience, 19 of them as an editor.
Peter, 54, was born in Saltburn and brought up in a Middlesbrough steel-making family but chose journalism as a career on the advice of his English teacher.
Having trained at Darlington College, Peter was appointed as a trainee reporter with the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph in 1981. The job was meant to have been given to a young Jeremy Clarkson but he was mistaken for Peter during the interview process!
Peter joined The Northern Echo in 1984, rose to Deputy Editor before moving to the Hartlepool Mail as editor in 1997. He returned to The Northern Echo as editor in 1999 and, in 2013, he was awarded the MBE for services to journalism and community life in the North-East.
He stepped down as the longest-serving editor The Northern Echo’s illustrious history in April 2016 in order to run his own media company.
Other career highlights include being named UK Columnist of the Year and North-East Journalist of the Year.
He is a deputy lieutenant of County Durham and was made the first ambassador for the Butterwick Children’s Hospice, having donated more than £30,000 to the charity from his speaking fees around the region.
Peter also has extensive experience in media training, running courses for prospective news editors around the country over several years. He has delivered masterclasses at universities and colleges across the North-East, specialising in campaigning journalism. He is a board member of the National Council for the Training of Journalists.
His proudest campaign while editor of The Northern Echo was cutting heart bypass waiting times in Britain from an average of 12 months to three months.
More recently, Peter has established himself as a broadcaster with the BBC and is a regular compere at events and ceremonies in the region.
He is also a children’s author, having had six books published under the “Monstrous Morals” series.
