C&A Pumps growth continues with significant new contracts

AN ENGINEERING firm’s reputation for flexibility and specialism has helped it win new business with some of the region’s biggest companies.

C & A Pumps and Engineering has secured in excess of £70,000 of contracts within the housing, construction, transport, marine engineering and nuclear sectors in recent weeks.

The most significant deal is an order to supply and install five new underground pumping stations at the Hitachi Rail plant, currently under construction in Newton Aycliffe.

Contracts have also been secured to pressure test filtration systems at Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station; to refurbish two pumping stations for housing provider Gentoo; and to supply a specialist submersible pump for the Metro line on behalf of Nexus.

In addition, C & A Pumps has been asked to install an effluent line to divert toxic water away from a landfill site in County Durham, and service the effluent systems of an offshore rig support vessel, currently docked in Sunderland.

The business, which only set up in 2012 and employs 12 staff from its Hartlepool headquarters, puts its success down to its capacity to respond to challenges from clients of all sizes and from all sectors.

Alan Roberts, Managing Director of C & A Pumps, said: “We have quickly built a solid reputation based upon our specialisations and ability to get all manner of jobs completed on time and efficiently.

“It can be the case that we’re working on new filtration systems for the nuclear power station one day and then installing a new toilet in an office block the next day. When you are a small business such as ourselves, flexibility is so important and that has been key to our success.”

C & A Pumps and Engineering launched as a pump specialist and to install and maintain electrical and mechanical systems primarily for building firms, local authorities and managed workspaces.

But the orders have flowed in since including contracts with some of Teesside’s largest chemical firms, as well as maintenance work with golf courses, racecourses, schools, parks and community buildings.

Its reputation for specialised engineering work, particularly with regard to drainage and effluent systems, was enhanced earlier this year when C & A Pumps was named one of the Tees Valley’s Best New Businesses.

Mr Roberts added: “It has really encouraged me to make significant in-roads into so many different sectors, particularly with the Hitachi development. Once we are in front of these huge businesses, we can prove how flexible the C & A team is and hopefully that will lead to long term, successful partnerships.

“It’s largely down to our strength for completing specialised, technical jobs that other firms might not be able to provide. Some of the work has come from direct contact with businesses we are building relationships with, but what is great is that we are repeatedly getting approached by some big names across all sectors which is opening doors for C & A Pumps and allowing the business to prove what it can do.”
