MEP Election Question Time Event

Why do the Euro Elections matter? Why are Members of the European Parliament (MEP's) important? How do/can MEP's improve the wellbeing of small business people? 
  
These, and we hope many other relevant questions, will be put to 5 candidates from political parties standing for election at the Euro Elections on Thursday 22nd May 2014. 
  
The event is organised by the Durham/Darlington Branch Committee and will commence at 7pm with a Buffet, followed by a 90 minute panel question and answer style meeting chaired by Chris Lloyd, Political Editor of the Northern Echo. The style of the meeting will broadly follow the BBC Question Time format, getting under-way at 7.30pm prompt. 
  
Attendees may wish to submit questions in advance of the meeting or raise issues form the floor. Questions should be business related, short and to the point thus allowing the panel to answer as many questions as possible which will result in a memorable and informative meeting.

Background information: 

The Euro Elections, properly known as Elections to the European Union Parliament (EUP), are held every 5 years on a fixed term arrangement. Voters are required to select one party that is listed on the Ballot Paper, the result is decided by a complex proportional representation counting system. The UK is divided into regions, one for each of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and 9 covering England. Each region is allocated a number of MEP's according to its population, the PR voting system means that parties obtain less votes than the party which obtains the majority of the votes cast, still has an opportunity of representation in the EUP. 
  
The candidates for each party are ranked on a list system, in the North East there are 3 candidates per party and a total of 3 candidates will be elected as MEP representatives for the North East EU Regional Constituency.
