Merritts Solicitors LLP is proudly celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026, marking six decades of providing trusted, independent legal advice to generations of local families, businesses and individuals from the High Street in Yarm.
Founded in 1966, Merritts has grown from a small High Street practice into a thriving firm of 30 staff, while remaining true to the traditional values upon which it was built - personal service, strong community ties and independent legal expertise.
The firm´s history is closely intertwined with the local community and its current premises. As part of the anniversary celebrations, Merritts will be reflecting on its journey from a photograph of the building taken in 1984, shortly after the firm moved there, alongside a recent image captured this year, highlighting both the heritage of the practice and its continued presence at the heart of the High Street. Merritts marked the occasion and celebrated with its staff with a trip to the York races.
The firm was established by Richard Merritt and for many years grew under the partnership of Noel Coward, David Holtham, Graham Rickleton and Gerard Moran. It was the vision of these individuals that established the foundations for the successful practice that exists today.
A defining feature of Merritts´ success has been the loyalty and dedication of its people. Among those celebrating significant service milestones is Jackie Bruce, the firm´s longest-serving employee, who has been with Merritts for an incredible 42 years, having joined just one year after the move to the current premises.
This year also marks two notable anniversaries within the team. The firm’s Senior Partner, Helen Baxter celebrates 35 years with the firm, while Victoria Skelton, Head of Litigation, marks 20 years of service. Alongside them, many other members of staff have devoted substantial portions of their careers to Merritts, reflecting the firm´s strong culture and commitment to its people.
The firm´s story is also one of family and continuity. Today, Managing Partner, Matthew Moran continues the work started by his father, Gerard Moran, helping to lead and grow the practice while maintaining the same values and client-focused approach that have defined Merritts for six decades.
Family connections remain a distinctive part of the firm´s culture. Within the accounts team alone, three generations of the same family now work at Merritts. Jackie Hughes has dedicated many years to the firm and has since been joined by her daughter, Ashley, and granddaughter, Libby. Elsewhere in the business, Ben works alongside his mother, Paula Warburton, whose own journey with the firm has become a well-known and valued part of Merritts´ history.
Over the years, the partnership has evolved through successive generations of leadership. Following the founding partners, Helen Baxter became a partner, alongside Paul Johnstone and then followed by Matthew Moran. More recently, the partnership has expanded further with the appointments of Alex Riordan, Joanne Jackson, Paula Warburton and Charlotte Fairfax, ensuring the firm remains well-positioned for the future.
While much has changed in the legal profession over the past 60 years, Merritts has remained committed to its niche as an independent high street law firm. At a time when many local practices have merged, relocated or disappeared altogether, Merritts continues to provide accessible, local legal services from the heart of the community.
The firm has embraced new ways of engaging with clients and the wider community, expanding its presence through social media, local events, networking opportunities and community initiatives. This commitment to growth and innovation has been recognised through achievements including being named a finalist in the Northern Law Awards, in the category of small law firm of the year.
Reflecting on the milestone, Managing Partner Matthew Moran said: “Reaching 60 years is a tremendous achievement and testament to the dedication of everyone who has been part of Merritts over the years. We are incredibly proud of our history, our people and the trust that generations of clients have placed in us. While we continue to evolve and embrace new opportunities, our commitment to providing independent, local and personal legal services remains exactly the same as it was when the firm was founded."
As Merritts Solicitors LLP celebrates its diamond anniversary, the firm looks forward to building on its proud heritage while continuing to serve the local community for generations to come.
