Together John Hays and John Waterworth have more than 60 years’ experience in travel and tourism. In this open event they will share their personal and professional stories of survival and success in an ever changing industry that can find itself, at any time, at the mercy of political systems, industrial action and, of course, the weather.

They share a record of sustained achievement and entrepreneurial skill, but the sectors they operate in are entirely different.

John Waterworth is chief executive of Parkdean Holidays, one of the UK’s leading providers of holiday homes including caravans, lodges and apartments within 24 award-winning holiday parks across the country.

Parkdean has grown significantly via acquisition, playing a key role in the consolidation of a highly fragmented sector and in driving standards in a key part of the UK Tourism sector. The business has complementary revenue streams from holiday hire, caravan and lodge sales, on park retail spend and owner income.

John Hays is the founder and managing director of Hays Travel, the UK’s biggest independent travel agent selling package, all inclusive and long haul holidays from 34 shops in the North East and a call centre in Stockton employing a total of 800 people.

Hays was named as one of the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies in the UK to Work For in 2006 and continues to break its own turnover record year on year, with its most recent high being £450m. In 2010 John was inaugurated into the British Travel Industry Hall of Fame.

Both Johns are outstanding entrepreneurs, picking up numerous accolades within the industry and beyond in recognition of their business acumen and achievements.
