pythonfestival: Opening Weekend!

Hot on the heels of winning the National Arts & Business Award we are delighted to present a creative Arts Festival with a difference!

Launching this Saturday 20 July, and continuing to 3 August, this free event will take place at all four Python Galleries spanning the North of England and offering new creative opportunities for artists and residents alike. Organised by the curatorial team at Python, the Festival is open to everyone and will include artist talks, creative workshops and poetry evenings, plus the first Python Open art exhibition featuring over 150 artists.

Saturday 20 July from 10am-4pm
 

This will be the special opening day for the Python Gallery and the Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet where you will be the first to see all the talented artworks from the region.  On show at The Heritage Gallery will be over 30 artworks including sculpture, painting, illustration and photography.  The winner of the open exhibition will be announced at 12.00pm!

Saturday 20th July 10am-4pm 

Festival Launch Day. FREE
We will be open all day for the official launch day of the festival and will be announcing the winner of this venue at 12pm.  We are a 10 minute drive or bus journey away from our sister gallery Python Gallery, so you are able to take in both sites of the North East exhibition in one! Have tea, coffee and biscuits here in our on site coffee shop and then head over for the winner announcement at Python Gallery at 3pm.


Wednesday 24th July 12pm

Art in Urban Regeneration. FREE

In 2004 the Arts Council audaciously claimed that "In some areas, including some of the most deprived urban centres such as Newcastle/Gateshead or Walsall, culture-led regeneration, largely drawing on lottery funds, has contributed to the revival of whole communities". This talk will consider the regional and historical motivations for this commitment to an arts policy with wide-ranging social and economic ambitions. It will explore the twentieth century origins of the idea that art could be an effective tool of urban regeneration as the handmaiden of industry as well as business. The history will be considered through examples from North East England as well as from the United States, the inspiration for many approaches to art in urban regeneration in the UK.

 
Saturday 27th July 10am-4pm 

Cargo Fleet Reunion From 12pm. FREE
         

We are having a reunion day and asking all those with memories of this beautiful building to come along and share their experiences! Did you work in the building pre restoration? Did your mother, father or other relative bring you as a child? Have you always walked past the building and want to find out more? Drop in from 12pm and share your memories and experiences.

Saturday 3 August 10am-4pm 

Memories of Middlesbrough From 12pm. FREE
        

Join us for a look into Middlesbrough’s past, sharing your stories and memories of at this informal get together over coffee and lunch.

Please feel free to bring along any photographs or memorabilia you would like to share and discuss.

 

The galleries are FREE to enter and The Heritage Gallery at Cargo Fleet will be open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday's 10am-4pm for the duration of the Festival.   For more information on visiting please visit www.pythonartsfestival.com
