Upbeat message from market after NEXT closure

The boss of Middlesbrough’s historic Dundas Indoor Market said there is still hope for the town centre despite the devastating loss of NEXT.

David Harris said that even though a succession of major retailers have shut up shop, the Market’s independent traders continue to provide choice and value for money.

“We obviously can’t compete with giant companies like NEXT, Debenhams or House of Fraser and it’s so sad to see them close,” said David, who has managed the Market for 10 years. “But they’ve all gone and we’re still here.”

In the last few months there has been a major cash investment in the Indoor Market. That has resulted in 2,500 sq. ft of additional retail space creating seven new units, while the existing ones continue to be developed and upgraded.

That has allowed popular retailers like ASB Football Shirts, selling retro Middlesbrough tops, and PM Toys and Collectables to expand while offering opportunities for new local businesses to start trading. At the same time Alta Ego – one of the quirkiest shops in Teesside – has doubled in size.

The newest arrival in the Market is Dazzle Me, run by Oluwadamilola Ayeni – known as Lola – who graduated from Teesside University last year with a master’s degree in Design. She had obtained her first degree, in Agriculture, in her native Nigeria.

Lola designs and makes clothes by hand and offers the latest hair trends – braids, cornrows and extensions – as well as expert advice.

“I’m not just here for people from the black communities, but anyone who has an interest or a passion for braiding their hair or wearing customised clothes. I’m trying to bridge the gap,” said Lola.

The 34-year-old used to have a fashion shop in Nigeria but her first ambition was to be a nurse: “As a grew older I realised that I’m scared of blood so that was no good. But I always liked fashion and dressing up. I started sewing for myself and realised I was quite good and decided that I would be able to do it for other people as well.”

Dundas Indoor Market was suggested when Lola was looking for a place to set up her business in Middlesbrough. She said it is perfect for her needs: “I wanted to stand on my own and be visible to people.”

Like Lola, all of the traders benefit from an all-inclusive deal which means their rent covers the cost of their energy as well as business rates and fibre broadband.

That means the price of a unit is as low as £75 per week to help new tenants get their businesses up and running through the make-or-break early months.
